Target Penetration vs Arrow Mass by Draw Weight

The penetration of the current target by the arrow, is plotted against arrow mass for several bow draw weights. This plot is enlightening in that it show that heavier arrows always have better penetration. Further, when the Ashby mode is enabled in the Hunting>Game panel is checked, the likely benefits of various broadhead designs can be visualized.

Independent Variable: Arrow Mass

The arrow mass parametric (ArrowMassMeasured) variable.

Dependent Variable: Penetration

This variable (TargetPenetration) is dependent on numerous parameters, particularly the point type and its characteristics.

Note the use of pvArrowMassMeasured. This is the manual arrow mass as in the Arrow>Assembly panel, and which is automatically set as the selected mass source.

Control Variable: Bow Draw Weight

The bow draw (BowMyDrawForce). Obviously heavier bows will produce greater penetration, however it can be seen that a lighter bow with an optimized arrow can out perform a heavier bow.

Comments

Arrow penetration is a controversial subject with no absolutes. See the coverage elsewhere in FlyingSticks for more details.
